When Ranger Coffee was being developed, we decided to follow one important principle: if you're going to create a coffee blend in honor of our Soldiers, it needs to be a good one. And if you're going to name it after U.S. Army Rangers, it had better be a very good one, where careful selection and high quality standards are the norm.
Ranger Coffees are all made from artisan blends of Specialty Grade Arabica coffee, the highest quality of coffee bean as graded by the Specialty Coffee Association of America. Our skill and commitment to excellence make all the difference in the selection process: only about 2% of coffee grown in the world can be considered "Specialty Grade" and chosen for use in Ranger Coffee blends. That's a far cry from the c-grade (commercial) Arabica coffee you'll find on the shelves of grocery and discount stores, even those bags from some national chain coffee shops.
All Ranger Coffees were created by Roast Master John Woodward of Columbus, Georgia, using his own blends of exotic coffees like Ethiopian Harrar, Sumatran GM, Columbian Supremo, Ethiopian Yirgacheffe and Tanzania Peaberry to develop specific flavor profiles. He personally blends and roasts each order in micro-batches, preparing only a few bags at a time, and then hand packages each one to ensure only the freshest coffee reaches our customers. It was John who also developed the hyper-caffeinated blends of Ranger Coffees, which have approximately twice the caffeine content of our regular blends.
The idea for Ranger Coffee began several years ago when the founder, Zach Thomas, was pulling all-nighters as a student at the United States Military Academy at West Point. But it was during his service as an instructor at the U. S. Army Ranger School (home of the motto, "Sleep's a crutch"), that the idea became reality, and in 2005 Ranger Coffee was born.
The original Ranger Coffee blend was named in honor of this select group of American Soldiers, and a special hyper-caffeinated version was added with twice the caffeine content of regular coffee to provide the extra kick that extended duty often requires. A year later the company added another blend called Airborne Prop Blast, along with its hyper-caffeinated counterpart HALO Joe, to continue the tradition.
In 2008 Zach passed on the company to a longtime friend, Larry Lunceford, a U. S. Army veteran and coffee lover from New Orleans who served two tours in Vietnam. His heart for supporting our Soldiers was a perfect fit for the original mission of Ranger Coffee, "Never Forget Those Who Serve." Joining him later that year was a Columbus native and University of Georgia graduate, Trevor Williams, who serves as marketing support, webmaster and newsletter designer.
If you ever visit the Columbus-Fort Benning area, you're invited to have a cup of coffee on us at the Columbus Coffee Company, followed by a personal guided tour of the roastery where Ranger Coffee is crafted. Just send an email to Larry@RangerCoffee.com, let us know when you'll be in town and we'll schedule a convenient time for you to come by. We'd love to meet you and show you first hand why we believe our Ranger Coffees are the best!
From the very beginning, support for our Soldiers has been at the heart of Ranger Coffee Company. In 2009 this idea began to find new expression under the theme, "Coffee on a Mission," by using monthly newsletters to tell stories of our troops in the Middle East, features honoring our Veterans, Tributes in remembrance of fallen heroes, and information about groups that support Soldiers and their families.
The most rewarding opportunity so far has been a special page on the Ranger Coffee website that enables customers to buy bags of coffee for our Soldiers in the Middle East and include a personal message of encouragement to accompany their gift. Ranger Coffee adds to their gifts by donating bags of coffee as well and paying the Priority Mail postage. This program has already led to ongoing support and friendship between our Soldiers and citizens back home, adding new meaning to our motto "Coffee on a Mission." Here's what one Soldier had to say:
"Thank you for the coffee you donated to me and my Soldiers. It really means a lot to know that you and your customers spent time and resources putting a care package together for Soldiers you don't even know! And to tell you the truth, it is very hard to get good coffee out here, so we are especially grateful for your generous support!"
